Intro

Low sax in the vents, rain on four forty one. Cracked phone in the cup holder, everybody “cool.” Yeah.

Verse 1

7:18 by the lot off four forty one, neutral ground by the chicken spot, engine still runnin’. She kissed his forehead twice, I kept my voice low, new girl in the passenger, hands folded like a church row. Hollywood plate on the ex car, Miami Gardens on mine, kid got a backpack draggin’, one lace untied. We all smiled too hard, made the moment look clean, like he couldn’t read shoulders at the age of thirteen. I said, “Text when y’all home,” she said, “same to you,” everybody played peace while the brake lights bled blue. New love looked away when old pain walked past, history got a perfume, and it always lasts.

Pre-chorus

four forty one don’t pick a side, it just hold the headlights in a straight line.

Chorus

It’s a triangle on four forty one, three phones, one child, everybody typing like court. Public story say, “I’m done,” private story say more, screenshots in the rain, pride knocking at the door. It’s a triangle on four forty one, new love, old love, little heart in the storm. We all want the last word, but the kid needs the quiet, so I swallow that reply and let the road ride.

Verse 2

9:06, group chat jumped like a bad fuse, “Who was late?” “Who posted?” “Why you let him wear those shoes?” Voice note one minute, voice note three, kid in the back watching cartoons on low battery. Screenshot of a close-friends story with the green ring cropped, somebody typed “respect” then respect got dropped. I saw my name in all caps, saw hers with a period, new girl read the side chat, face getting serious. The boy asked for fries, I said, “Yeah, we can stop,” while the phone did backflips by the hazard light clock. I hate when grown folks turn pain into proof, like a child don’t feel thunder through a Bluetooth.

Pre-chorus

four forty one don’t pick a side, it just count the exits while we all lie.

Verse 3

She said, “I’m not your judge, but I’m tired of the bench,” watching names pop up like we splitting the rent. Her side chat got quiet when my ex sent a clip, thumb hovering over fire, then she tightened her lips. She don’t wanna be step-anything in a war zone, don’t wanna clap back from a love she don’t own. I saw her in the window, all neon and hurt, trying to love a man with a calendar full of work. She said, “Peace got boundaries, baby, not just prayers,” and that line hit harder than the whole thread there. I put the phone face down, finally looked in her eyes, two adults in the front learning not to weaponize.

Bridge

[voicemail beep] “Hey, this is the school calling about your son.” Rhodes drops out, sax walks alone. No jokes, no screenshots, no side door tone. Just three adults breathing on the same cold phone.

Verse 4

10:12 next morning, office line, fluorescent hum, principal said he swung first, said he wouldn’t come. Suddenly the group chat cleaned up quick, no emojis, no shade, just “What time can you get him?” Ex said, “I’m leaving now,” I said, “I’m ten away,” new girl packed a snack and wrote his homework page. For once, nobody cared who had the better case, all that old smoke folded when we pictured his face. He sat outside the office with his hoodie string chewed, angry at a world he ain’t old enough to use. I knelt by his sneakers, said, “Look at me, son, you ain’t the message thread. You the reason we run.”

Verse 5

Midnight again, three cars on the same black strip, Hollywood southbound, Gardens with a tight grip. New girl headed east with the radio low, ex at a red light typing what I already know. Me, I wrote five lines, deleted every one, watched the cursor blink like a little loaded gun. Private story open, close-friends ring bright, public face calm with a hurricane inside. four forty one kept humming, no witness, no judge, just toll dust, wet glass, and a dashboard scuff. Three roads pulled apart under one blue moon, same child sleeping, same silence in the room.

Pre-chorus

four forty one don’t pick a side, it just keeps the red lights honest at night.

Outro

Blinker, blinker, blinker. No send.
