Intro
The envelope came on a Tuesday when the rain decided it was staying... Cream stock thick enough to feel like a promise already broken somewhere else... She showed it to me like proof the world was finally paying attention... I told her it was just paper with expensive handwriting... She told me it was the back room...
Verse 1
The shop sat on the kind of street where rain sounds different on buildings you can't afford to remember... Velvet curtains hung like they were guarding something that already knew who it wanted... Security camera red light blinked slower than a heartbeat counting who didn't belong... Inside the air smelled like money that doesn't have to announce itself... The woman behind the counter smiled like she had practiced in mirrors bigger than most apartments... "Essence," she said, the word landing like it had already been paid for... One spray on the wrist, another below the ear, places that remember touch longer than reason... The first girl laughed like the sound was covering something cracking... Then she looked at her phone like the screen was a mirror that finally liked what it saw... The second one watched her wrist and decided the line was moving too slow... By the time the third pushed forward the bottle was already lighter in ways that had nothing to do with the liquid and everything to do with the way people were already posting the proof they had been chosen...
Chorus
Essence... One spray and the air changes in ways the lungs don't know how to explain... Essence... Hands reaching for what the skin can't hold onto once the high turns... Essence... The back room keeps the receipt but don't keep the version of you that walked in... Some nights the only thing left is the smell on your skin and the knowledge it was never yours to keep...
Verse 2
She called from the parking lot with rain on the windshield making everything look underwater... Said the bottle was gone but the feeling wasn't, said she could still smell it on her coat after wiping her wrist raw... The invitation was torn at the corner where she held it too tight... I asked what the back room looked like when the velvet stopped pretending... She said it looked like every place she was told she wasn't enough but dressed in better lighting... The magazines showed faces that never checked the price tag on belonging... By the time she got home the high had already turned into hunger with no name... The kind that makes you check your phone every thirty seconds knowing the screen won't give what the spray promised...
Chorus
Essence... One spray and the wanting starts in places the skin doesn't know how to name... Essence... Everybody reaching for the same empty bottle like it still had something left... Essence... The back room don't give refunds on who you were before you walked in...
Verse 3
The fight wasn't loud at first... It was the quiet that happens when people realize the thing they came for is already on somebody else's pulse... One girl grabbed the bottle, another grabbed her wrist, glass hit marble like every 2 a.m. comparison that never got the likes... The woman behind the counter didn't flinch... She just looked at the cracked bottle like a transaction that finally balanced... When it was over the floor had pieces of glass that caught the light like tiny invitations nobody wanted anymore... She left with nothing on her skin but the memory of the hiss and the feeling the mirror had won...
Bridge
I wrote this letter the night the rain let up... Because I saw what the spray took and what it left when the bottle was empty... Not rage... Just the quiet that comes when you realize the thing you sprayed on your neck was never the thing missing... It was the space between who you are when nobody watches and who the screen told you to be... Some doors you walk through cost more than the card in your hand... Some doors cost the version of yourself that used to know how to leave...
Outro
Essence... It don't stay on the skin the way the high promised... Essence... It stays in the places where you used to know who you were when the screen was dark... If the back room ever opens for you... Don't go in alone.
