Intro
The coffee knew when I would wake. The window knew when it would rain. You sat across the table turning your ring around again.
Verse 1
My car logged each movement. Navigation picked the street. The news arranged itself to fit the person it wanted us to see. Before I chose a melody, the room had one prepared. You said, "Can I tell you something?" I said, "Just give me half a second dear." Then every screen went bright at once, and I looked down too late.
Chorus
Leave one thing unanswered. Leave one road unmapped. Leave a little room for someone to surprise you where their at. When the answer beats the question and the future knows your plans, in the not to distant future, leave one choice in human hands.
Verse 2
Our girl came home with two blue stars and one red mark in pen. A program wrote, "She needs more focus." She asked for my opinion. I almost read the words out loud as if the choice were mine. Then she turned the paper over: she had drawn us side by side. The colors crossed the borders. Her sun was much too wide. I said, "Tell me why it shines like that." She talked until midnight.
Chorus
Leave one thing unanswered. Leave one road unmapped. Leave a little room for someone to surprise you where their at. When the answer beats the question and the future knows your plans, in the not to distant future, leave one choice in human hands.
Bridge
A calculation finds the road, not the porch where your friend waits. A clock can number every hour, not what made the hour worth the wait. A voice can sound sure and be wrong. A guess can wear a tie. The quickest thing inside the room should not decide your life.
Verse 3
Tonight the coffee made itself. The glass predicted rain. You sat across the table turning your ring around again. You said, "Can I tell you something?" Every screen began to shine. I closed them without checking. You took your time. I gave you mine.
Chorus
Leave one thing unanswered. Let one road stay unmapped. Leave a little room for someone to be more than what was tracked. When the answer beats the question, let the question have a chance. in the not to distant future, keep one choice in human hands.
Outro
You took your time. I gave you mine.
