I'LL CARRY YOU BADLY

Grief handed down as small things: a mispronounced word, a folded ticket, a coat still in the hall closet.

Intro

I'll carry you badly, but I'll carry you.

Verse 1

The hall closet gave up your winter coat. One peppermint slept in the pocket seam. You said "Wens-dee," softening the middle, and hummed in any room where news might be. You folded losing tickets into quarters, then slid them in your Bible by your bed. No one knows the reason that you did it. I looked around. There's no one left to ask.

Chorus

I'll carry you badly, but I'll carry you. Some parts will fade; some parts I'll get wrong. A box can keep your face, not how you entered a room. If I'm the last place you are living, then live here, with the cracks and missing rooms. I'll carry you badly, but I'll carry you.

Verse 2

Three boxes wait beneath the kitchen table, a thousand dates in careful ink. They know the school, the street, the summer, but not why you would hum before the phone would ring. I know you pressed the bread bag flat, and wore one glove to check the mail. The records say the day your breathing ended. They cannot say what disappears when mine does. I'll carry you badly, but I'll carry you. No file can do this work for me.

Bridge

Tonight I told my child, "She said it Wens-dee." He smiled and tried the word your way. I did not ask him to remember. I only needed it heard today. The first funeral took your breathing. The second waits for mine. So we stood there in the kitchen and said your small things one more time.

Verse 3

My child went back to his drawing. I put your Bible in the box. A ticket slipped out by the binding, creased to fit the place it marked. I nearly opened it, then left it in the shape your fingers chose. Not proof, not all of you, just something I am the only one who knows.

Chorus

I'll carry you badly, but I'll carry you. Some parts will fade; some parts I'll get wrong. A box can keep your face, not how you entered a room. If I'm the last place you are living, then live here, with the cracks and missing rooms. I'll carry you badly, but I'll carry you.
