Intro
They talk about wonders made of stone that lasted centuries. We making ours out of what the storm left behind and the will to keep standing.
Verse 1
On the Palmetto the Pyramid leaning like the stack of late notices on the kitchen counter. One more month and the whole thing sliding into the same ditch they dug for the old blocks. Hanging Gardens in the little plot behind the family house where my people tried to grow something that wasn’t made of concrete and court dates. Zeus in the courtroom on 27th when the judge look down like he deciding who gets to keep breathing. We all in the temple praying the fire don’t reach the last thing we got that feel sacred. Mausoleum on every corner where we light the candle for the ones the rain took before they could see the other side of the sentence. Colossus on the overpass with arms out like it’s holding the sky so the rest of us can walk without getting crushed by the weight of what they took. Lighthouse flashing through the humidity on the edge of everything we know, so the next one don’t drown in the same water we learned to breathe in. This the environment. Wonders everywhere if you know how to read the cracks they grew out of.
Verse 2
The weight of the Pyramid is every late notice that feel like it’s building its own monument on your back. The Gardens is the weight of trying to make a home feel like paradise when the AC broke and the kids asking why the water taste like the bill ain’t paid. Zeus is the weight of the system looking down every time you try to stand a little taller than the last generation. Artemis is the weight of protecting the last little sacred thing when they keep coming for the land and the culture and the breath. The Mausoleum is the weight of carrying names that don’t get statues or streets or chapters. The Colossus is the weight of being the symbol even when your own foundation cracking from the pressure. The Lighthouse is the weight of being the one they call when the storm hit, even though your own battery been low since the last time they raised the rent. This the weight. And it don’t get lighter just because the history books got different names for the people who carried it.
Verse 3
Look in the mirror. Who you see staring back? The Pyramid leaning but still standing after all these years of heat and pressure and people trying to knock it down. The Gardens that somebody swore couldn’t grow in this soil but we made life come up through the cracks anyway. The Colossus that fell but the story of it standing is what keep the next one from giving up. The Lighthouse that kept flashing even when the keepers were tired and the storm was loud. I see all seven in the lines on my face from the jobs that didn’t want me, the losses that tried to break me, the nights I stayed up figuring out how to be the light for somebody else. The mirror don’t lie. It just show the version of the wonder that decided to survive the Florida humidity.
Verse 4
They want us to believe the only wonders worth carving into history are the ones they built with our hands and then put their names on. The enemy is the story that says we ain’t built nothing that lasts longer than a season. The enemy is the textbook that got whole chapters on empires that fell and a footnote on the blocks they tore down to build the new ones. The enemy is the idea that survival and resistance and keeping your people fed ain’t monumental if it don’t got marble and a tour guide. So we fight back by naming our own wonders out loud. By saying the Pyramid is every family that stacked one more month on top of the last one when the numbers said they shouldn’t have. By saying the Lighthouse is every elder who kept the light on for the next generation even when their own was flickering. We fight the erasure by building so loud the rain can’t wash the names away.
Verse 5
To the jit on the bus stop at 183rd listening to the rain hit the shelter like it’s trying to teach you something. The real wonder ain’t the stone that lasted two thousand years. It’s the decision to keep building even when they tell you it won’t matter. It’s the choice to be the Lighthouse for somebody else when your own battery low and the storm loud. It’s the Gardens you plant in the middle of the concrete so the next one got something green to look at when everything else gray. It’s the Pyramid you stack one brick at a time, one month at a time, one breath at a time, even if nobody put your name on the plaque. Pass that down. The wonders ain’t in Egypt or Greece or some book that got different priorities. They in the 305, in the 954, in the breath we still got and the names we still saying out loud. Build yours. And make sure the next one know how to read the cracks.
Outro
They built theirs with gold, We building ours with what’s left after the system take its cut and the rain try to wash the rest away.
