Intro

Forty-seven rows. Sort: surname, then years. Cursor alive in column A. The lock clicks green.

Verse 1

Seven fifty-two, East Annex, the fourth floor. Batch forty-seven waits behind one locked door. Sort surname, then service; same rank, same lane. Blue border, new order, date an frame. Badge four-six-one; run one check on the name. End date, pay rate; no red flag in the claim. Click quick, print slips; then six sheets hit the chute. I place the packet beside my keyboard, mute. Top-left staple; stack lies flat in Tray Two. Status sent; exit letter routes to review. Code seven, severance; address checked twice. Forty-seven drops forty-six on the right. Malik works Shipping, and Rosa works Claims. Denise works nights; Hector's eleven years reign. I don't read the letter or picture the room. I make the row vanish, then leave before noon.

Chorus

Effective immediately, date set. Name in the box, no face in it. Click. Print. Staple. Save. Next row. Same cold rage. Effective immediately, date set. Name in the box, no face in it. Click. Print. Staple. Save. Next row. Same cold rage.

Verse 2

Row thirty-one. Leon trained me in June. He showed which printer in the corner to choose. I check his badge twice, then the overtime field. His packet comes warm; black toner won't seal. Row nineteen. Nia covers lunch at one. Peppermint tin by her phone, dent in front. Tick, split, click; six clipped fields all flip green. A gray cardigan hangs over the chair mean. At ten-eighteen, Keisha texts me, "You eat?" I type, "After this," let the three dots retreat. Row twelve, row ten, row nine, then row eight. Each number gets light while the stack gains weight. Clock hand clips forward; the floor stays still. No footsteps, no meeting, no manager drills. I read every date, never look at a face. Select and confirm; put the packet in place.

Chorus

Verse 3

Row seven clears at eleven-oh-four. Row six shows no code, one dash, an a coded floor. Refresh, new sort; one record returns. Same start month, same four digits for year. The first name is mine. The last is mine. Badge four-six-one in the same blue line. Date, rate, desk eight; every field fits me. The photo has my lanyard. That's my flow, row, in one go The cursor glows; the whole floor moves real slow. My hand leaves the mouse, makes one lap, comes back. I type August twenty-four. Black letters stare back. Click, print; warm paper slides into stack two. Top-left staple, same bite I gave the crew. I set my badge on the desk with the rest. Select. Confirm. Generate. Save.

Chorus

Effective immediately, my date set. Name in the box, my face in it. Click. Print. Staple. Save. My row. Same cold rage. Effective immediately, my date set. Name in the box, my face in it. Click. Print. Staple. Save. My row. Same cold rage.

Outro

Badge on the desk. Screen idle. Effective immediately.
