Intro
Two papers on one desk. Two red A's. One clock stopped at 11:58. One kept moving till two.
Verse 1
I read the rubric twice, it asked me for a page, Claim, support, conclusion, clean enough to grade. So I built the quickest bridge from question into proof, Typed a careful prompt and made the answer tell the truth. Call it borrowed muscle, call it knowing what to use, Calculators entered math and nobody blamed the two. If the target was the product, then the product made the mark, Why worship all the walking when I reached it before dark?
Verse 2
Mine smell like two a.m., eraser dust and heat, Three starts in the trash can, cold noodles by my feet. I fought a blank page hard enough to lose, Then found one crooked sentence I was scared enough to choose. No timestamp shows the moment when a thought becomes your own, No margin note can measure what gets built when you're alone. His paper reads like daylight, mine got fingerprints and dents, Then the teacher laid them level like the hours never meant-
Chorus
Show me how you got it, Not the answer, not the score. Show me where the thinking changed What your thinking was before. Show me how you got it, What was the tool and what did you do? Maybe work is part the answer. Maybe getting there will do.
Verse 3
You keep calling it a shortcut like the long road owns the land, Like a shovel makes you noble when a lever fits your hand. I checked the facts, cut the fluff, gave the teacher what she sought, If I steer the conversation, am I absent from the thought? You learned through your resistance; I learned how to delegate. Both are forms of judgment, both can carry hidden weight. The world will grade the outcome when the deadline shuts the gate, So why should pain be evidence that makes the answer great?
Bridge
Maybe the work was the answer- Or maybe I'm just slow. Maybe the work was the answer- I have no way to show.
Verse 4
The teacher lifts the first one, then the second, checks each name. Red pen circles both conclusions, writes one letter on each frame. The daxophone bends upward, wood and pressure shape a throat, It says "A" across the room, then gives both papers one note. No judge inside the gradebook asks who changed along the way, No column for the muscle that tomorrow might repay. One kid leaves with time to spare, one leaves with something grown, But neither can prove what he kept, and neither leaves alone.
Chorus
Show me how you got it, Not the answer, not the score. Show me where the thinking changed What your thinking was before. Show me how you got it, What was the tool and what did you do? Maybe work is part the answer. Maybe getting there will do.
Outro
Two papers on one desk, both folded for the ride. One kid trusts the measure. One wonders what it hides. Maybe the work was the answer- Or maybe I'm just slow.
