Intro
Down twenty-two, seven on the clock, remote click, rim clank, sink drip. Three screens glowing, paper plates bending, somebody says, “Don’t leave yet.”
Verse 1
Living room packed, dollar chips in a bowl, two phones on the couch, one stream moving slow. I’m half in the game, half checking my plays, four hundred nine spins after twenty-eight days. My 305 duffel by the radiator leans, cracked glass phone showing numbers that sting. She asks if I ate; I say the app been lying, every skip feels personal when rent is Friday.
Pre-chorus
Scoreboard on the wall, scoreboard in my hand, both say I’m behind, both dare me to stand. She don’t raise her voice, she just clears a seat, I thought she needed me, maybe she been carrying me.
Chorus
Don’t count me out when the room gets quiet, down twenty-two and the rent still due. You held the line while I called it dying, now I’m looking at the score like, who carried who? Who carried who? Who carried who? You passed me hope when I dropped my mood. I was yelling at the game; you were feeding the room, now I’m looking at your hands like, who carried who?
Verse 2
Third quarter ugly, couch starts sinking, I say quit now, save face, stop thinking. She says nephew needs shoes, your mom needs a call, I say nobody plays me, why answer at all? Fridge hum louder than my catalog page, light bill blinking in a red little rage. Possession by possession, I make it about me, like Cleveland up big in my bloodstream.
Pre-chorus
Scoreboard on the wall, scoreboard in my hand, both say I’m behind, both dare me to stand. She don’t take the bait, she just folds a sleeve, I thought she needed me, maybe she been carrying me.
Verse 3
Then one bucket falls, then one stop sticks, somebody spills soda when the corner three hits. She pays the light bill with the room still loud, orders two plain pies, keeps the friends on the couch. Kev says he leaving, she says, “Stay till the horn,” sets forks by the sink like a captain at dawn. I didn’t build community, I just kept score, she opened the apartment and they filled the floor.
Bridge
[Play-by-play energy under vocal, no real broadcast sample] Final minutes crawling, strings start to climb, every missed shot sounds like a message I declined. I wanted a miracle shaped like applause, she gave me one shaped like electric paid off. Remote click, rim clank, sink drip, my pride on mute when the whole room lifts.
Verse 4
Overtime coming, my throat gets tight, she ain’t screaming much, she watching my eyes. She says, “You still here?” like she means more than game, blue nail chipped, sauce streak on her vein. That shot rolled in, that other one rolled out, I see how close leaving is to turning around. The room starts jumping, I stop acting cool, somebody been betting on me harder than I do.
Pre-chorus
Scoreboard on the wall, scoreboard in my hand, both say I’m behind, both dare me to stand. She don’t need a speech, just the truth in my teeth, I thought she needed me, maybe she been carrying me.
Verse 5
Final horn cracks through the ceiling fan, cups on the table, pizza box in a bag. I reach for my phone like a mic in my palm, then see her wrist deep in plates and pans. I don’t say comeback like it’s merch on a wall, I rinse the bowls, stack two, then all. Rain taps the window, postgame low, dish towel in my hand where the verse should go.
Pre-chorus
Scoreboard on the wall, scoreboard in my hand, both still glow, but I finally understand. She looks over once, and I move my feet, I thought she needed me, maybe she been carrying me.
