Intro
Rain tapping the windshield like it's reading my palm on the 826 Glovebox stuffed with folded receipts and a court slip from last spring The little one in the back don't know the stage he's stepping on yet But the block already got the script waiting at every exit sign
Verse 1
Opa-Locka crib, infant lungs pushing against the humid air, mama wiping sweat from his head with the corner of her t-shirt Schoolchild in Liberty City kicking rocks on the way to the bus on 27th, backpack heavy with rules he can't read yet Lover in Hollywood apartment sighing at cracked screen messages that don't pay the light bill on time Soldier on 79th, blood hot, chasing the bag under the overpass while the rain traces lines on his face Justice at the steps on 27th ave, belly full from the food truck, opinions sharp as the gavel he carries in his mind Old man at the bus stop on 836, voice thin as the rain, telling stories to the wind about how the corners used to hold more Second childhood back in the same house off 183rd, forgetting where the keys went but remembering every storm that ever passed through
Chorus
Seven ages on the same block, the rain don't pick a side. From the first cry to the last breath we all take the ride. The stage is the concrete, the script is the heat that never leaves. You play your part 'til the lights flicker out on the same street. The play don't change, only the players get replaced by the rain. Seven ages, one city, same rain falling on us all.
Verse 2
The weight hits different when the infant becomes the one folding the rent receipt three times before it goes in the drawer Schoolchild learns the rules but the rules don't stop the eviction notice from sliding under the door Lover's poems turn into late night arguments over who spent the last twenty on gas for the 826 commute Soldier's ambition turns into another court date and the same room he used to walk past like it couldn't touch him Justice belly gets full but the opinions start tasting like the same rain that fell on his own childhood Old man's memories bigger than his hands can hold, spilling out at the bus stop while the 836 pulls away without him Second childhood creeping back when the phone rings and the name on the screen don't register no more Every stage got its own receipt and none of them add up to enough to buy back the time
Chorus
The play don't change, only the players get replaced by the rain And the rain don't care which stage you standing in tonight
Verse 3
Look in the mirror, see the infant in the old man's tired eyes staring back Schoolchild still kicking rocks inside every time the pressure rise on the Palmetto Lover still sighing at messages that promise but never change the rain on the glass Soldier still chasing but the bag got chains wrapped around both ankles now Justice still judging but the mirror shows every stage he ever played in the same frame Old man still talking to the wind like it's the only one that stayed Second childhood creeping when the keys in his hand don't match the lock he used to open without thinking The cycle spinning like the fan blade in that old Opa-Locka hall, same wobble, same hum
Verse 4
Now the enemy is the script itself, the one that says this is just how it goes on these blocks Fight it with the same hands that used to fold the church fan slow during the long sermons Break the stage by pulling the young ones close and showing them the exits ain't the only way out More than court dates and rent that always come back with extra fees More than hot blood cooling into the same cold nights on the same strip The enemy is the lie that the seven ages can't be rewritten with new lines So I stand in the middle of the 826 traffic in my mind, voice carrying the weight of every stage that came before Telling the block the play can be rewritten if we stop reading from the same rain-soaked page
Chorus
The play don't change, only the players get replaced by the rain But we can change the ending if we change how we ride through the rain
Verse 5
Lesson passed down from the porch light still flickering when the rest of the street gone dark The infant don't stay helpless if the village still got hands to wipe the sweat and hold the weight Schoolchild learns better when the rules got his language in them and not just the ones printed on the paper Lover finds peace when desire turns from chasing to building something the rain can't wash away Soldier puts the ambition into protecting the corners instead of bleeding on them for nothing Justice learns the gavel cuts both ways so you swing it with the memory of every stage in your bones Old man's memories become the map the young ones read when the rain gets too heavy to see the road Second childhood, the return to needing each other ain't the end, it's the circle closing the right way Pass it to the next one before the rain washes the lesson off the windshield for good
Outro
Rain still tapping Receipt still folded three times in the glovebox Stage still spinning on the same block But the hand that writes the next line...
