NOBODY REMEMBERS THE BLOOD

A bronze horse, a clean plaque, and a child who will only ever learn the tidy version. What a town keeps, and what it quietly files off.

Intro

At the foot of the statue, a child reads the name. Bronze horse in the sunrise, no mud on the mane. One hand points forward like he never looked back. Nobody carved the hands that pulled him from the attack.

Verse 1

The hill was won, that part can stay. He crossed through smoke when most men prayed. But one man froze, one horse went down, one friend took blame so he could keep the crown. He wanted the glory. He feared the loss. He made one brave choice and three men paid the cost. By dawn they raised his flag above the gate. By dusk, the dead had names too hard to celebrate.

Chorus

Nobody remembers the blood. They remember the hill and the flag going up. They remember he stood when the brave ones ran. They remember the victory. They remember the man.

Verse 2

His daughter wrote it down years later. She left out the friend. It read much greater. The schoolbook trimmed the smoke and doubt. The town put flowers where they took the bodies out. A teacher said, "He never turned." A line that clean is easy to learn. The child at the statue mouths it with pride. No room on the plaque for the ones at his side.

Chorus

Nobody remembers the blood. They remember the flag going up. They remember he stood. They remember he won. They remember the man.

Verse 3

Then the year turns fifty. The mayor speaks. The horse gets washed. The brass gets cleaned. The coward is gone. The debt is gone. The dead are a number they read and move on. His fear becomes faith. His luck becomes skill. His hunger for praise becomes iron will. A man who was mixed, as most men are, gets polished till nobody sees the scar.

Chorus

Nobody remembers the blood. He climbed the hill. He raised the flag. He saved us all. Remember the man.

Verse 4

Maybe that is why the story survived. A man with no cracks is easier to guide by. A child needs a name when the road gets steep, a town needs a promise it knows how to keep. But if courage needs mercy from what really was, what do we owe to the ones under us? The statue says forward. The stone says his name. The wind takes the flowers and leaves both claims.

Outro

The hill was won. The blood was real. The story got cleaner. Which part do we need?
