Intro

Screen door slap, the record skip a notch Same four o'clock, the news still on the box Foil on the counter, flour on her wrist Save me a plate before I know what I'll miss

Verse 1

Lil cousins fighting over who sit by the wall This year they ain't loud, this year they barely call it Somebody moved the folding chair so she can reach the pot Nobody said the reason, but everybody thought it Plates stacked like dominoes, the gold ones from the shelf The ones she only pull out when she don't trust nobody else I'm twenty-six and quiet, watching how the table set Counting every laugh like I'mma need it when she left

Pre-chorus

She say "eat now, I'll fix mine after" She been saying that my whole entire life And I never heard the weight in it Til today, this 441 light

Chorus

Save me a plate, just in case Foil on the top, write my name in tape She say eat now, she'll fix hers after That's the only way she ever stayed Save me a plate, just in case Carol City and a same gray plate Don't nobody say it out loud, no But we holding every second today

Verse 2

Uncles in the kitchen and they actually helping now Big Ray on the greens who ain't peel a thing for ten years, wow Cracked phone on the windowsill recording how she stir it Like the recipe a will and we trying not to miss a minute She moving slower this year, lean a little on the stove But she still talk that cash shit on her mac, "ain't nobody close" And we laugh too hard, we laugh to keep the quiet off the floor Cause the quiet got a meaning that it never had before

Pre-chorus

She say "eat now, I'll fix mine after" She been saying that my whole entire life And I never heard the weight in it Til today, this 441 light

Chorus

Bridge

She made everybody favorite all in one day Like she knew, like she planned the way she'd stay She'll fix her plate after She been saying that my whole life She'll fix her plate after And we finally understand why

Chorus

Save me a plate, just in case Foil on the top, write my name in tape She say eat now, she'll fix hers after That's the only way she ever stayed We split the last plate three ways slow Give the babies the part they'll remember most Don't nobody say it out loud, no But we holding every second today

Outro

Brown Tupperware, the lid don't match Carol City, four o'clock, the news still on Save me a plate Save me a plate Just in case
