NOBODY KNOWS US

thought-rap about being seen

One man, two kinds of light: the lab that takes his blood and the patrol that reads his face. Same night, same name, two different meanings.

Intro

Orange lot in the rear glass, blue rolls slow. White wristband in my pocket. Monday says go.

Verse 1

Sodium on the hood; old gold. I showed 'em my pass. Short talk, soft walk; blue crawls past the store slow. I keep Smoke for the corner, first name zipped tight. Bus pass, lab card, both flat in the black light. Patrol low at the curb, red rolls over chrome. Green says go; feet move slow while my pulse skips. Coat flips, chain slips; clinic card, been in it since six. Six sharp at the door, glass gives back my face. Pen taps, name box, day stamp by the page. First name in black ink; Smoke stays off the sheet.

Chorus

Lab lights say my name. Blue lights know the game. One takes blood, one tries to cut my mane, Nod to the sirens Hum to the buzz Trade the sky twice Nobody knows us

Verse 2

Plastic chair, wax glare, heel squeal in the hall. Black line on the cup, tired smile at the glass. Numbers came up; thumb taps cup, ask how far, how fast. Phone shakes, screen wakes; green gleam on the glass. Kid draws suns on a glove, gum stuck to the page. Old man taps pills, flips lids, still counts in his palm. Sleeve rides high; blue bruise, blue stamp, curb side. She sees, keeps peace, says "easy," turns the white tube on. First name lands soft; jaw locks, eyes drop from door to floor. Out there, one word can buy time, catch a charge, start a car.

Chorus

Lab lights say my name. Blue lights know the game. One takes blood, one tries to cut my mane Nod to the sirens Hum to the buzz Trade the sky twice Nobody knows us

Bridge

The form asked, "Do you feel safe at home?" I checked yes too fast. Then the siren bent through the vent. Vent buzz bent right back. My pen went back through yes. Then I left the box black.

Chorus

Lab lights say my name. Blue lights know the game. One takes blood, one tries to cut my mane, I turn one coat two ways, trade the curb for the train. Out there, my face pays first. Lab lights know my name.

Outro

Dawn puts both colors in the bus-stop glass. Wristband where the old watch used to flash. I don't turn the jacket at the corner this time. Lab lights know my name.
